A new medical report has found out that the number of obese people around the world has increased by 600% over the past 40 years. The report says that about 12% of the world's population suffers from obesity. Within the next decade 20% of the world's population will be overweight.
The report is based on the body mass index (BMI) , the relationship between height and weight. A normal, healthy person has a BMI of between 20 and 25. People with a BMI of over 30 are considered to be obese.
It is no surprise that most of the world's obese people live in the wealthy countries of the world. Six countries - the US, Britain, Ireland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand account for a fifth of the world's obese people. China and the United States have the highest number of obese in the world. In contrast, the poorest countries have the lowest number of overweight people. In southern Asia and southeastern Asia, for example, 25% of the population are underweight.
Having too many overweight people puts an enormous financial burden on our health system, through rising costs for medication, doctors and hospitals.
In the past scientists believed that the cancer cells of a tumour were not all the same. Changes in cell structure varied in different parts of the cancer area. Now scientists claim that they may be able to stop cancer cells at their roots. They aim to create a vaccine that could guide immune cells to attack cancer cells and stop mutations from spreading.
Although it is still a long way before that happens, scientists hope that testing this new cancer treatment on humans could begin within the next five years.
However, there are some facts to consider. First of all, not all forms of cancer develop at the same speed . Some may be so quick that it would be impossible to find out where mutations begin in time. Others would have a higher success rate. In addition, such a treatment would be expensive, because each patient would have a "personalized" vaccine.
Immunotherapies have been on the market for some time but only about a third of the drugs have worked and proved successful. Up to now doctors have mostly used chemotherapy to treat cancer. Even though this form of treatment kills off cancer cells when they divide it also attacks healthy cells and produces many side effects.
For a long time we have known that sadness or a stressful event can cause heart muscles to become weaker. This may cause shortness of breath, a pain in the chest and may eventually lead to a heart attack. Now, a study published by the European Heart Journal claims that happiness can also lead to the same symptoms.
Swiss researchers at the University of Zurich looked at data coming from almost 500 patients in 9 countries who were likely to acquire such a broken heart disease. In most cases the death of a family member or close relative, an accident, divorce or other relationship problems caused such a heart weakness.
However, in 20 patients the same symptoms were triggered by happy and joyful events, such as birthday parties, weddings, the birth of a grandchild or after their favourite team had won a competition. Experts call this the happy heart syndrome.
The researchers point out that doctors should be aware of both sides when treating patients. According to the study reasons for a broken heart syndrome may be more widespread than previously considered. The study has also found out that in over 90% of the cases older women over 60 were at risk.

More than 5 million people around the world die from air pollution every year . Most of the deaths occur in Asia, especially India and China. In China , about 1.6 million die of polluted air every year, in India the number is about 1.3 million. 85% of the world's population live in areas where air pollution is higher than normal.
Most of the air pollution comes from factories, traffic and burning fossil fuels to produce electricity. In large Asian cities like Beijing or Delhi, air pollution can reach 10 times the normal rate on any given day.
Breathing in polluted air is dangerous to a person's health. Small particles emitted into the air can lead to heart diseases, lung cancer and strokes. Health experts claim that deaths resulting from polluted air are higher than from malnutrition or obesity. Scientists warn that the number of deaths will continue to rise if nothing is done to fight air pollution.
In developed countries laws have been passed to make air cleaner. In large cities air quality is monitored around the clock. In the developing world, on the other hand, governments have not done enough to protect the population from pollution.
Especially in China, where the country's population is ageing, more and more older people are in danger of becoming ill due to air pollution. In many areas coal is used to cook and heat. In India, indoor pollution is widespread because people cook with wood or cow dung.
