Carl Sosebee Acting Chief of Staff Senior Advisor Carl Sosebee has been delegated the authorities and responsibilities of the Chief of Staff of the Peace Corps pending our new leadership. With a strong commitment and dedication to the Peace Corps mission, Carl has served the agency since 2002, with the trust and confidence of each administration. Carl has worked at the Peace Corps as an Attorney Advisor, Deputy General Counsel, General Counsel, and since 2010, Senior Advisor to the Director. Carl has over 30 years of experience in the federal sector. In addition to his service at the Peace Corps, he has held positions at the Community Services Administration, the Department of State, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Prior to his federal service, Carl was a private legal practitioner, handling criminal and civil cases in the District of Columbia. Carl graduated from the University of Maryland and holds a J.D. from Antioch School of Law. Kilimanjaro originated during a conversation Hollie had with her sister. When Montannah heard of this, she wanted to join in. "She told me, 'Mommy I want to do it with you,'" Hollie said. As the Kenneys began their research, they met an early obstacle: Montannah was required to be at least 10 years old. However, the duo figured out they needed a special permit to make the climb and settled on a date in 2019. Then in January, upon the news of an 8-year-old girl reaching the heights of the Kilimanjaro in July 2017 -- the pair sped up their climb date and hired a guide for their ascent in March -- two months before Montannah's eighth birthday. "We got our act together," Hollie said. "It fell together so easily, and beautifully." Despite not having any nearby mountains to climb in Austin, Hollie, a former professional triathlete, said they were already in decent shape before deciding to make the trip. They trained by doing hours-long hikes on weekends and shorter ones during the school week. "We couldn't do any altitude training, but we are not in area for that," Hollie said. "She was in good shape with running, swimming and basketball. We spent a lot of time hiking." For the actual climb, what surprised Hollie the most was the low visibility on the mountain. "It was way steeper than we thought." Hollie said. "We didn't know what was a cliff and what was a cloud. That was big eye opener." When asked if she would do it again or climb another mountain, Montannah said "maybe" but not as "long" as this journey. Libraries make information more accessible and provide places for people of all ages to read, study and learn about the larger world. They're also valuable as community meeting spaces and technology hubs. During their service, many Volunteers work with their communities to build or improve libraries. Here are five Volunteer projects to support libraries around the world. 1. Moldova A Volunteer's library renovation project transformed the space into a vibrant hub of the community, offering classes on everything from computers to knitting and making the library more accessible to residents. Benin The "Books for Benin" project turned an empty room into a school library where students can study and prepare for exams. Students can also use their school ID to check out books to take home. Zambia A Volunteer answered a community's request for a library by working hand-in-hand with local leaders to create a space that has become a center of learning in the community. A small village in eastern Botswana wanted to create a reading room and resource center to make books and technology available to all. The village development committee worked with their local Peace Corps Volunteer to transform a run-down, empty building into a library filled with books and computers. Throughout the developing world, Peace Corps Volunteers are working in their communities to share the precious gift of education. Often Volunteers' dedication to teaching is matched by a severe lack of supplies and facilities in which to help. Contributions to this fund will help Volunteer and community projects such as school construction, English language training, school and library material, and adult literacy. The projects above were funded through the Peace Corps Partnership Program (PCPP), which is a small grants program funded through private sector donations.
