Thank you for your email and interest in Cape Breton University (CBU)! To attend CBU you will need to fill out an application for admission which is available on our website at https://www.cbu.ca/come-to-cbu/apply-now/.

We will need official transcripts of academic record from your high school studies and from any post-secondary studies you may have completed to date. Documents can be sent via mail, email or fax.

If your first language is not English, or if your education was not delivered in English, we will need proof of proficiency in English from a recognized language testing school (i.e., TOFEL, IELTS, CAEL, MELAB, CANTest). Provided you meet all other requirements other than proof of English Language Proficiency we can provide a Conditional Acceptance. In this instance you would have to supply the proof of English Language Proficiency before you arrived to begin your academic studies.

Proof of proficiency may be provided by one of the following:

Previous Education in English:

- Successful completion of at least two years of academic instruction at a secondary institution, as recognized by Cape Breton University, where English is the primary language of instruction, or

- Successful completion of at least 30 credit hours (or equivalent) at a post-secondary institution, as recognized by Cape Breton University, where English is the primary language of instruction.

Official Testing Scores: (Please arrange to have test results sent to Cape Breton University from one of the following agencies.)

- TOEFL score of 550 (paper test), 213 (computer test), or 80 (internet test). See ets.org, Institution code 9142

- IELTS score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0. See ielts.org, or

- CAEL score of 60, cael.ca, or

- MELAB score of 85, melab.ca, or

- CanTEST score of 4.5 (reading & listening), 4.0 (writing) seeolbi.uottawa.ca/en/cantest.php.

English Language Training

Cape Breton University has partnerships with English language training institutions. Students who successfully complete one of these programs are deemed to have met CBU's English language proficiency requirements without further testing required. Please visit our web site at cbu.ca/admissions for further information.

CBU also has an agreement with the International Centre for EAP (ICEAP) as our exclusive local language training partner. The centre is located on campus and in nearby Glace Bay, Nova Scotia and offers 8 levels of language instruction to help students prepare for successful academic careers. A separate application is required for admission to ICEAP. After successful completion of the ICEAP Exit Exam and CBU Bridging Program ESL conditionally accepted applicants will gain final acceptance to CBU. You can find more information on ICEAP online at iceap.ca or by emailing info@iceap.ca. You can find a list of other acceptable ESL Training Institutions online at cbu.ca/admissions/english-proficiency-requirements.

Applications for admissions from international students will be reviewed on an individual basis. In general, we require graduation from an academic secondary school program or equivalent, with an average of 'C' in five senior academic-level/university preparatory courses. Specific programs at CBU may have additional requirements with regard to required subjects and these must be met as well. These International Admissions section of our Academic Calendar or contact our International Admissions/Transfer Credit Advisor, if you have questions about country-specific requirements. We do evaluate students' credentials on a case by case and country by country basis.

CBU will consider accepting transfer credits from other Universities you may have studied at or providing credit for prior learning achieved through work experience or programs of study received from sources other than a university. Applications to have a Transfer Credit Assessment or Prior Learning Assessment completed can be found on our website at the same location listed above for Applications for Admission.
