Before the COVID-19 outbreak, 1 in 8 children in Minnesota and western Wisconsin were experiencing hunger. Now, due to the effects of the pandemic, that number is closer to 1 in 5. Second Harvest Heartland and our hunger-relief partners have been working night and day to ensure that the additional 112,000 children experiencing hunger in our area are connected with the healthy food they need to thrive.
Since mid-March, we and our partners have held 147 emergency grocery pop-ups and distributed 48 million pounds of food (that’s 40 million meals).
But, we know that parents and guardians are still struggling—watering down milk and skipping meals so their children can eat—and we have more work to do to end COVID-era hunger.
This desperation is really starting to set in in our community. We're seeing that just how long we've been sustaining the economic impacts is really stretching families and seniors, families with children, to that breaking point.
