Dear Parent/Carer Welcome back! I hope that everyone has had a great summer break and that students are now feeling ready for and excited about the new academic year and all the experiences it will bring. Today, in assemblies, I was delighted to share news of this summer's success stories with students, some of which you may already have read about on our website – the Collegiate's best ever A Level results and record breaking top grades achieved at GCSE, in a year when new, more difficult qualifications have been introduced and national standards have dipped. I would like to congratulate all students again and thank staff and parents for their contributions towards this success. I hope that younger students are feeling inspired to aim even higher and I am looking forward to celebrating all they will achieve this year. As the new academic year begins, our new timings of the Collegiate day also begin. From tomorrow, the Collegiate day will start at 8.30am for all students – students should be in their Tutor Rooms by this time (a warning bell will ring at 8.25am), having arrived at the Collegiate from 8.00am. As before, any student who arrives late for school will have a lunchtime detention on the same day. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, students will be dismissed at 2.40pm, whilst on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students will be dismissed at 3.30pm. Most extra-curricular activities (mainly at lunchtimes or after school) will commence over the next two weeks and a full programme will be published with this week's Newsletter. I am sure that we will all get used to the new timings quite quickly and begin to feel the benefits also. We welcome the following new members of staff to the Collegiate this year.  Miss S Williams Teacher of English / 7SEW Aquila College  Miss N Pocock Teacher of Science / 7NMP Aquila College  Mr G Towers Teacher of History / 7GBT Aquila College  Ms M Cibrelis* Teacher of MFL Aquila College  Mr J Uzun Learning Support Assistant Aquila College  Miss O Oginni Teacher of Mathematics / 7OLO Orion College  Miss R Luniak* Teacher of MFL / 7REL Orion College  Mr D McCormack Student Supervision Assistant Orion College  Miss Y Williams Teacher of English / 7YRW Pegasus College  Miss R Swain Teacher of Mathematics / 7RCS Pegasus College  Mr J Valler Teacher of Science / 7JWV Pegasus College  Miss I Campbell Teacher of Science / 7ISC Phoenix College  Miss E Rushton Teacher of Classics / 7EKR Phoenix College  Mr E Ketibuah* Teacher of RE Phoenix College  Mrs N Jeeves Learning Support Assistant Aquila College  Mr G Daniels Curriculum Leader, PE / 9GAD CPA College  Ms D Marques* Teacher of PE / 8HMB CPA College  Ms V Laville* Teacher of Food & Nutrition CPA College  Miss D Sudra Teacher of Business Studies / 12DDS College VI We also congratulate the following colleagues who have been appointed to promoted posts:  Miss K Harvey* has been appointed to the post of Inclusion Co-ordinator in Aquila College (alongside her previous role as Inclusion Co-ordinator, Orion College)  Mr A Cameron* has been promoted to the post of Director of English  Miss D Mackenzie has been promoted to the post of Curriculum Leader, Science in Pegasus College  Miss K Rushton has been promoted to the post of Curriculum Leader, Science in Phoenix College  Miss A McKirdy has been promoted to the post of KS3 Senior Tutor in Phoenix College *temporary posts to cover maternity leave or other staff absence Finally, we extend our congratulations and best wishes to Mrs Waters, who gave birth to a baby boy, Daniel, last month and to Miss Hurst, Assistant Principal, who got married over the summer and has returned to the Collegiate as Mrs Strange. Full details of all staff in each of the Colleges can be found on our website. Under each College page, details of events for each Year Group have also been uploaded. Letters, like this one, are sent to parents via email and also uploaded to the website. Parents can access details of their child's reports and attendance through the Parent Portal. The Student Planner remains our most basic tool for communication and parents are asked to check and sign this every week. Today, Tutors have taken the opportunity at the start of a new academic year to review The Riddlesdown Commitment with all students. It is important that we recognise that our students' success and the success of the Collegiate stem from the very high expectations we hold of ourselves and of each other. In particular, I remain grateful for parents' support with the following issues: Uniform – Details are on our website and on p9-11 of the Student Planner. Whilst the vast majority of students have the correct uniform and wear it smartly whilst at the Collegiate, it is important that all students do the same on their journeys to and from the Collegiate also. The appearance and conduct of our students send strong messages to the local community and so students should be mindful of their reputation and always seek to enhance this. In particular, hoodies are not allowed and will be confiscated if brought to the Collegiate. If a student is incorrectly dressed, we will try to rectify the problem by lending items if possible, but if necessary, we will contact parents to let them know that their son/daughter is being sent home to change. Please also note our rules on jewellery and visible body/facial piercings – one single pair of studs worn in the lower ear is allowed and nothing else. I should add, at this point, my apologies for the difficulties that I know that some parents experienced in trying to purchase new PE kit from Kukri over the holidays. I hope that the letter that Mr Smith sent in my absence on 3rd August 2017 and Miss Ward's update letter sent last week have helped to reassure parents – if there are any further queries or concerns, please do let us know. Mobile Phones & Valuables – We understand that parents may wish their son/daughter to bring a mobile phone to school so that they can be easily contacted after school hours. However, our rule is "on site, out of sight" meaning that mobile phones must be switched off and kept out of sight throughout the school day. Any mobile phones seen or heard will be confiscated and placed in the safe, from where parents may collect on Monday or Thursday mornings between 8.00-11.00am. No other valuable items should be brought to the Collegiate and any items that students do bring remain their responsibility. The Collegiate does not take responsibility for any such items that are lost or damaged. Should a parent wish to get an urgent message to their child during the school day, please telephone the Collegiate and we will pass the message on. Similarly, if students are needing to contact parents urgently during the day, they should ask their College Administrator who will be pleased to assist. "Riddlesdown Ready" – This is the phrase we use to mean that students are ready for lessons and ready to learn – they have the correct equipment (pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, calculator, protractor, pair of compasses, colouring pencils, glue stick all carried in a pencil case), the necessary books (including Student Planner) and a positive attitude towards learning. Tutors check that all students are "Riddlesdown Ready" every morning; they may lend equipment if necessary, or send a student to purchase an item from the Stationery Shop, but clearly it is preferable for students to arrive at the Collegiate fully prepared. Parents' support with all of these matters is greatly appreciated. It is a maintained focus on these every day standards that allows our students to engage fully with their learning and make the best academic progress. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions, concerns or suggestions - we value the strength of our Home-School Partnership and thank you for your support in helping your son/daughter to follow The Riddlesdown Commitment and work to fulfil their potential. I am looking forward to another successful year ahead. Yours sincerely Mr S Dey Principal Dear Parent / Carer Firstly, I would like to thank you for your child's overwhelming commitment to the school production rehearsals this year. Rehearsals have been very busy but also very productive. I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of the information that you need to know as the production week draws closer. All information you need is below:  The dates of the school production are Wednesday 21, Thursday 22 and Friday, 23 March 2018. Tickets for the production will cost £6.00 for full price tickets and £4.00 for concessions. Tickets will be available shortly after February half term from Mrs Jones in the Bronte building.  You may already be aware that during February half term we will be holding two rehearsals. These will be on Tuesday, 13 February 2018, 9.30am - 3.30pm and Friday, 16 February 2018, 9.00am – 2.30pm. Students are not required to wear school uniform to these rehearsals but will be required to bring a packed lunch and water, as there will be no catering facilities in school during the holidays.  The full cast will be required to attend a weekend rehearsal on Saturday, 17 March 2018. This rehearsal will be from 9.30am – 3.30pm and students will be required to bring a packed lunch and water, as well as their costume.  Term time, after-school rehearsals resume after the half term break and will continue to be on Wednesday 3.00pm – 4.30pm and Thursday 3.00pm - 5.00pm for the full cast, and Friday 3.00pm - 4.00pm for the main cast only (individuals will be informed if they are part of this).  On the evenings of the performances, students will be required to arrive at school at 6.00 pm and register with a member of staff in the Library. This will give students plenty of time to prepare for the show, 2 which will start at 7.00pm. It is predicted that the production will end at approximately 9.15pm, so you should arrange for your child to get home safely at 9.30pm. Please be aware that it is the responsibility of parents and carers to ensure that their child gets to and from rehearsals and the show performances.  Overleaf is a reply slip for you to give permission for students to attend the rehearsals listed above and to attend school on the evenings of the performances. Please return the reply slip to Student Services. Once again, I would like to thank you for your child's commitment to the school production. The next few weeks will be very busy but I hope both you and your child agree that it will all be worthwhile come production week. Yours faithfully Mr A Quarrell Mrs G Sheldon Leader of Drama Strategic Leader of Performing Arts Dear Parent/Guardian: We would like to inform you of the policies that have been put in place to ensure the health and safety of children needing medications during the school day. Our school district requires that the following forms must be on file in your child's health record before we begin to give any medicine at school: 1. Signed consent by the parent or guardian to give the medication. Please complete the enclosed consent form and give it to your school nurse. 2. Signed medication order. The written medication order form should be taken to your child's licensed prescriber (your child's physician, nurse practitioner, etc.) for completion and returned to the school nurse. This order must be renewed as needed and at the beginning of each academic year. Medications should be delivered to the school in a pharmacy or manufacturer-labeled container by you or a responsible adult whom you designate. Please ask your pharmacy to provide separate bottles for school and home. No more than a thirty-day supply of the medicine should be delivered to the school. When your child needs a medication to be given during the school day, please act quickly to follow these policies so we may begin to give the medication as soon as possible. Thank you for your help. Sincerely yours, School Nurse Telephone Attachments: Written Parent/Guardian Consent Medication Order Dear Parent/Guardian: Children need healthy meals to learn. HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILDREN QUALIFY AS HOMELESS, MIGRANT, OR RUNAWAY? Do the members of your household lack a permanent address? Are you staying together in a shelter, hotel, or other temporary housing arrangement? Does your family relocate on a seasonal basis? Are any children living with you who have chosen to leave their prior family or household? If you normally get overtime, include it, but do not include it if you only work overtime sometimes. If you have lost a job or had your hours or wages reduced, use your current income. 12. WHAT IF SOME HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS HAVE NO INCOME TO REPORT? Household members may not receive some types of income we ask you to report on the application, or may not receive income at all. Whenever this happens, please write a 0 in the field. However, if any income fields are left empty or blank, those will also be counted as zeroes. Time: 9:30 a.m. Dear Parent/Guardian, We sincerely thank all students and parents for the support they provide to the school. Whether your support is in the form of assisting with fundraisers or volunteering your valuable time for our various activities, all of our students benefit from your generosity. Fundraising is a reality for us. It is only through fundraisers that we are able to offer so many memorable programs and events to our children. With the various fundraisers this year, we were able to raise a total of $9,598.70. What has school council supported with the profits from our fundraisers in the 2015-16 school year? • Scientists in the classroom for all classes • Rocks n Rings introduction to curling • Play structure with accessible and buddy swings • Forest of Reading Club • Healthy snack program: including daily snacks available to all students, holiday lunch, pasta lunch, salad bar lunches and frozen yogurt bar • Santa Claus Parade float • Transportation costs for the year-end trips to Ontario Science Centre & East Side Marios/Art Factory • Offset a portion of the cost for the grade 6 trip • New student welcome kits • Buddy bench • Library and classroom resources • Family nights: Halloween Social, movie night, board games & literacy night, ball hockey night, June Jamboree None of this would have been possible without your generosity. So thank you again for your support this year, we look forward to continued support and fun activities for the children in the coming school year. Sincerely, Lindsey Allan (Fundraising Chair) & Jane Beaudoin (School Council Chair) Dear Parent/Guardian, Please find attached a Parent Declaration (PD) form which you should complete and return, by Wednesday 16 October 2013 at the latest, to the childcare service you have enrolled your child in. Completion of this form is a condition of funding under the Community Childcare Subvention (CCS) programme. Your childcare service needs to have received the attached form by the above date in order to make its service return to this Office in that week. By returning the completed form to your child's service, you will ensure that it receives the correct amount of funding from this Office and your childcare fees are reduced by any relevant subsidy under the CCS programme. The CCS programme subvents childcare costs of disadvantaged and low income parents. Subvention rates per full daycare place per week (i.e. over 5 hours) are: Band A - €95 pw for people in receipt of most Social Welfare payments including Family Income Supplement (FIS), CE workers, parents in secondary school, and also hold a medical card*. Band AJ - €50 pw for those in receipt of Job Seekers, Supplementary Welfare Allowance, Tús, Gateway and Part-time Job Incentive Scheme and hold a medical card*. (NB: for those in receipt of these payments, this cap applies where a child attends from 3 days to 5 full days per week). Band B - €50 pw for those who hold a Medical Card or a GP Visit Card. Also entitled are people in receipt of most Social Welfare payments listed under Band A/AJ but have no medical card and for people who no longer qualify for Band A/AJ this year but who were verified as being on Band A/AJ at the end of the previous school year will also be paid under Band B. (the Subvention Band list of rates can be viewed at www.dcya.ie under Childcare and CCS and Appendix 1 of the CCS Guide). * For those parents who have applied for and are awaiting a decision for a Medical Card in October, please ensure proof of the successful application is sent to Childcare Directorate before the appeal deadline of 31January 2014. No applications will be accepted after this date. NB: CCS subvention rates are reduced pro-rata, i.e. 50% for a place of between 3hrs.31mins and 5hrs duration; 33% for a place of between 2hrs.16mins and 3hr.30mins duration; 16% for a place between 1hr. and 2hr.15min duration. As a community service, non-subvented parents are asked to complete and sign this form as they pay the cost price of the service, which typically is lowered by other State supports e.g. reduced maintenance costs. To complete the Parental Declaration Form you will need • your name and the name of the childcare service • your PPS number if applying for support under the CCS programme • the name of your child and his/her date of birth • the PPS Number of your child (this can be found on documentation regarding his/her claim to Child Benefit, or by contacting the Department of Social Protection at their Lo-Call Number 1890-927-999 • The county and name of the primary school you expect your child (if applicable) to attend from September 2014. • If your child is born on/after 30/09/2007 please indicate if the child is attending primary school For the form to be valid, you must sign the form. Similarly, you must supply the PPS numbers required, to enable this Office to verify you and your child/ren's eligibility for support, and make a funding payment to the service. The parent/guardian with the greater Social Protection benefit/allowance should complete the form. Please note that there is a Disability Benefit Review in early 2014. Anyone in receipt of Disability Benefit/Illness Benefit/Occupational Injury Benefit in October and no longer in receipt at the time of the review will have their subvention adjusted accordingly. If you are in receipt of the CE/RSS/Tús/Gateway/Part Time Job Incentive Scheme/Springboard Course/FÁS Training Allowance/National Internship Programme/Domiciliary Care Allowance or are a Secondary School Student you must complete a Verification Letter. The Verification Letter is available from your childcare provider. The completed Verification Letter must be returned to your provider by 1 November 2013 with attached evidence as required. Please note that to be considered, for a Band by the CCS Service before the verification process is completed, you will need to give the provider proof of the relevant allowance and copy of Medical card if applicable, during the snapshot week. This will be kept by the Service until the verification process is completed and may be used by the Service to make an appeal in January 2014 if necessary. Otherwise your subvention rate will be affected. If you qualify for support under the programme but believe that your childcare service is not passing on the full subvention to you, you should contact your local City/ County Childcare Committee (contact details are available on our website www.dcya.ie under childcare), who will advise you in confidence of whether this is the case. Participating services are required, under the Equal Status Acts 2000 to 2004, to make reasonable accommodation for children with Special Needs. If you require further guidance to complete this form, please contact your service.
