We welcome questions about the Smithsonian and our events, exhibitions, collections, and research. This is an automated response. Please read this entire email, as it may contain the information you requested. You will not receive an additional response to inquiries answered by this email. If your inquiry is not addressed below, we will do our best to respond; however, due to the large number of emails we receive, a response may take up to 30 days. Questions related to upcoming visits to the Smithsonian will be prioritized. Answers to many questions can be found online at our Frequently Asked Questions web page. Visiting We will do our best to respond to your e-mail inquiries in a timely manner, but cannot guarantee a timely response for same-day and next-day visits. If you are planning a visit to the Smithsonian, please review our Visit page and print out a copy of our Smithsonian Guide and Map. Donations to Smithsonian Collections If you are writing to donate an object from your collection, thank you. In order for our curators to make an informed decision whether to accept your donation, they will need a complete donation submission package that includes a description of the object, including its history and dimensions, and several clear images at 300 dpi resolution. If you would like the Smithsonian to purchase your object, please also include your asking price. If your original email did not include all the required information, please resubmit your offer; incomplete donation offers will not receive a reply. If your email did include this information, it will be forwarded to the appropriate curator, who will contact you only if he/she is interested in your object. Under no circumstances should you mail your object to the Smithsonian without a prior curatorial request. Exhibiting Artwork or Objects at the Smithsonian If you have artwork or objects you wish to exhibit at the Smithsonian, please send a complete exhibition submission package that includes a letter of intent, biography, Curriculum Vitae (CV), exhibition description, several images at 300 dpi, and copies of selected press materials. We will forward your submission package to the appropriate curatorial staff for consideration; that staff will respond if they are interested in exhibiting your artwork or object. Please Note: Questions on the following topics will not receive a response. Identification, Authentication, and Appraisal The Smithsonian is not able to assist with identifying objects and does not offer monetary evaluations. We have compiled some general information on obtaining an identification and appraisal. Care, Preservation, and Conservation While we cannot give advice on caring for specific items, the Smithsonian provides broad guidelines and strategies on caring for historical objects.
