SDRC Clockwork Procedures for Instructors Eligibility: Students that receive exam accommodations may need to test in the Student Disability Resource Center Exam Lab. The student should provide you with their accommodation letter prior to scheduling a quiz, test or exam with SDRC. If you receive a request from a student from whom you have not received a letter please inform us as soon as possible. Security and Integrity of Examination Process: Exams are kept locked in a secure location until time to administer. The testing environment at the SDRC is monitored by physical proctors, video cameras and a remote system that allows staff members to see what students are doing on their computer screen during exams on which a computer may be used. Instructors are welcome at any time to visit our facility to insure that the integrity of the exam process is being upheld. Academic Dishonesty: In the event that academic dishonesty is suspected, our policy is to stop the exam and notify the instructor immediately. Our office does not make decisions on penalties, but will provide any information regarding what was witnessed. Testing Location: The testing center is located inside the Student Disability Resource center, located in the Student Services Building, 874 Traditions Ways - Room 108. Any questions regarding exam accommodations should be sent to: Student Disability Resource Center Exam Lab sdrc@fsu.edu 850-645-1853 Scheduling Tests: Students are required to schedule tests with our office at least a week in advance using the Clockwork test scheduler. This means if a test is to take place on Monday, they will need to register it on the previous Monday. We understand that there may be circumstances when one week advance notice cannot be given (pop quizzes). Our office can work with those cases as needed and discuss a plan with the instructor and student for those times. The link below has the instructions for students scheduling a test: https://dos.fsu.edu/sdrc/services/exam-lab Once a student has scheduled a test with our office, you will receive an email notification requesting that you submit the test. If you think that you have received this notification in error, please let us know as soon as possible. Below is an example of the notification: Date: Sunday January 10, 2016 3:14 AM To: ******** From: sdrc@admin.fsu.edu Subject: Test booking notification for 1114 Body: Hello (Instructor Name) This is an automatic email to notify you of an upcoming test booking. You have signed your child to Olari Gymnastics Association Pikkurytmiset group. The autumn semester starts 21.8.2017 and ends 8.12.2017. For important information about the group look below. SEMESTER PLAN The groups Semester Plan can be found here: http://www.ovo.fi/seasonal_info The files are named by the groups names and numbers. Please make sure you are looking at the right file for your group before saving and printing the plan! BASIC RULES During the first class of the term, the guardians have a chance to stay and watch the class, but otherwise the children are participating without parents. During the first class you need to check, fill in, and correct your childs information on the name list. Mark and "OK" next to your childs name after you've made sure all the information is correct. In case any information is changed during the term, please make the changes as soon as possible on the internet on your OVO account. This way you won't miss any crucial information. The group is led by the group leader and one or two assisting instructors. During and in between the classes the instructors have a very limited amount of time to answer questions, so in case you have a longer conversation in mind, please contact the group leader by email (firstname.surname@ovo.fi ). WHERE TO BE More information about how to find the place the class is held can be found here http://www.ovo.fi/liikuntapaikat. Press the blue mark on the map to see additional information about the selected place. Most places have very small dressing rooms, so we would suggest to have gymnastic clothes on before you get there. Parking spaces are also limited, so it will be more convenient to use public transport, carpool, or walking/biking if possible. OUTFIT An appropriate outfit for gymnastics is a leotard or tight fitting shirt/tank top with tights or leggings. Everyone is bare foot in the gym. Long hair shall be up and away from the face, jewelry and toys must be left at home. The child should have a water bottle and a rope with them to class. In case you do not yet own a rope, it can be bought during class from the teacher. The rope costs 7 euros and will be billed by email. Be sure to name tag your things clearly. During the first class it would be good to have a name tag on the child too, so the instructors can learn all the names as fast as possible. OVO is selling different kinds of gymnastics equipment. More information below. Products: http://www.ovo.fi/tuotteet CLASS RULES The class rules are good to go through with your child before the classes start. • Arrive on time and use the bathroom before class. • Enter the gym only if there is an adult inside and the gym is empty from other classes. Until the teacher arrives, the children are their guardians responsibility. • Hair must be up and acceptable gymnastics clothes shall be on. • Chewing gum and other edibles as well as jewelry must be left in the dressing room or at home. Water bottle and rope will be brought inside and put beside the gym wall. • Everyone is kind to one another and no bullying will be allowed! • When the teacher speaks, everyone listens! The instructors instructions must be followed. • Wall bars, climbing ropes, and rings are not allowed to be touched unless the teacher gives permission to do so. • Drink your water only when the teacher allows. Everyone has the water break at the same time. • After the class, please do not stall in the dressing rooms. ABSENSES All absences are good to inform the teacher about, especially if there are going to be several in a row. Please also let the teacher know in case for any particular reason the child wants to quit the class in the middle of the term. You might have a question that only they can answer. Or, you may have some important information to share with them. Whatever the case, we've found that many students are intimidated by their instructor and avoid communicating with them for as long as they can. This can result in you suffering in silence and/or missing out on getting the help you may need. Your STAR coaches are more than happy to help you reach out to your instructor. Here are a few tips that may give you the confidence you need to contact them: Some good reasons to contact your instructor You've looked for the answer to your question elsewhere, i.e. the syllabus, but you are still confused. You need to inform your instructor of personal events that will impact your class attendance/performance. You need further clarification about their expectations for an assignment. You received a low grade on a test or assignment and you would like to review it with them. Side note: if you are upset about a grade you received on a test or assignment, wait for 24 hours to pass before contacting your instructor. This will allow you to cool off and avoid saying something you may regret later. Before you contact your instructor Be Proactive! Try to find the answer to your question on your own first, either in the syllabus, your textbook, previous emails sent by the instructor, etc. Be mindful of their communication preferences. Often, an instructor will detail how they prefer for students to reach out to them, whether that be via email or a face -toface visit during their office hours. This information is most likely in the syllabus. Remember that your instructor is human! They usually encourage students to talk to them and enjoy helping students solve problems. That's probably why they became an instructor! Use proper etiquette when addressing them Check your syllabus to find out how your instructor prefers to be addressed. Many times your instructor will tell you what they prefer on the first day of class. When in doubt, address them as Professor xxx or Instructor xxx (xxx = last name). If your instructor prefers to be called something else, they will tell you. Dr. Suzanne Benack. Union College. "Advice From A Professor: How to Talk with Your Professor." https://muse.union.edu/mentor/advice-froma-professor-how-to-talk-with-your-professor/ Joelle Renstrom. Boston College. "How to Talk to a Professor – Explained by a Professor." https://www.noodle.com/articles/how-to-talk-to-aprofessor-explained-by-a-professor Proper email etiquette Never begin your email with "hey" or "hi." To be on the safe side, start with "Hello" or "Dear." As mentioned above, if your instructor prefers more informal greetings, they will let you know. Always follow their lead. Always put the reason for your email in the subject line!Instructors often teach several classes. So, add the course and section number to your email too. Don't use "text speak." Use appropriate spellings and grammar in your emails. Don't use language such as "c u l8r" or "thx". Keep your email short and to the point – what can they help you with? Also, be specific. Avoid asking questions such as, "Did I miss anything important" if you were absent from class. Don't provide too much personal detail that isn't necessary or appropriate. Thank your instructor at the end of your email! Proofread your email before you send it. Scheduling meetings If you would like to meet with them, politely request to meet with them during their office hours. Don't demand to see them. Email your instructor and inform them that you would like to speak with them, so they can confirm whether or not they'll be in their office. Determine their office hours. Again, this information can usually be found on the syllabus. Some instructors have sign-up sheets. Use those if they have them. Give options for your availability. Don't request a specific time. For example, instead of requesting to come to their office at 2pm, inform them that you have availability between 1pm and 3pm. After you've given options, let your instructor determine what time works best for them. Confirm your meeting! After your instructor informs you of a good time to meet with you, reply with a confirmation of the exact time that you'll be there. If for any reason you need to cancel or reschedule your meeting, let them know in advance and apologize for the inconvenience. If you have additional questions about contacting your instructor, feel free to call to speak with a STAR coach at 704-330-6754 or email star.success@cpcc.edu.
